Toshiaki Morikawa

Dr. Morikawa is a graduate of National Nagasaki University School of Medicine in 1977.

He had his initial training in National Nagasaki Central Hospital, then advanced to National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo to have residency training of chest surgery and surgical oncology.

After he experienced several hospitals, since 1992, soon after laparoscopic surgery had been available, Dr. Morikawa has independently started advanced thoracoscopic surgery by himself from the very beginning, in a small private hospital in Sapporo. 

By 1996, most chest surgery has become to be available by thoracoscopy.

He was invited to the Department of Surgery of Hokkaido University as an assistant professor in 1997, and his thoracoscopic surgery has further advanced. Again in 2005, he was invited to the Jikei University as a Professor of Surgery. He has been advancing safe and minimally invasive thoracoscopy, its clinical application and also teaching young surgeons.

He also has been interested in developing surgical instruments or procedures such as forceps, lung sealing system, and safer thoracoscopic surgery.

Dr. Morikawa is an Executive Board of Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery, and accelerating developing fine instruments under medical-engineering cooperation. He organizes Japan Society of Thoracoscopic Surgery, and is also reviewer of several scientific journals.
