Prof. Petersen is an international expert in Minimal Invasive Thoracic Surgery and has personal experience of undertaking more than 1400 Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Lobectomies, Segmentectomies and Thymectomies at his centre, which is leading in Europe with more than 3000 VATS Lobectomies and Segmentectomies performed overall.

In more than a decade Prof. Petersen has led clinical immersions at his centre with participation from many clinics in Europe, and he has proctored many thoracic surgeons in VATS Lobectomy by a Standardized Anterior Approach. He has given numerous lectures and educational seminars on VATS Lobectomy, performed live surgery and presented at numerous international conferences.

He has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals within the topics: VATS Lobectomy, VATS Segmentectomy, VATS Thymectomy, VATS Education and Simulation, Enhanced Recovery and Lung Cancer Screening.

He acts as a councillor of the European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS).
He is on the editorial board and reviewer for several scientific journals.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in health care management.
