Dr. Asai is currently Professor and Chairman at the Department of Surgery, Shiga University of Medical Science, Otsu, Japan. The department has one of the largest cardiovascular practices for advanced heart and vascular diseases in Japan. After postgraduate working in Kanazawa University, He joined the surgical training at New York University Medical Center as a general surgery resident and a cardiothoracic fellow under the supervision of Dr. Frank C. Spencer. In 2002, Shiga University of Medical Science appointed him as Professor and Chairman in the Department of Surgery, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Since then, he and his colleagues have established reputation of high quality innovative cardiovascular operations and no refusal policy for any emergency requests.
He was a pioneer surgeon performing total arterial multi-vessel off-pump coronary artery bypass (since 1996), developed the ultrasonic skeletonization harvesting method for the gastroepiploic artery graft (since 2001), invented “butterfly resection technique” for degenerative mitral valve repair (since 2006), and innovated new “extended sandwich patch” method for postinfarction VSD repair (since 2008). He has also been known as an expert surgeon for technically-demanding aortic arch surgery, total aortic arch replacement.
He serves on several editorial boards, he served as a board director of ISMICS. He has committed international cooperative activities, from regular visits to Choray Hospital (Vietnam), surgical live demonstrations in China, Malaysia, and Philipines to educational lectures in the US, Spain, Italy, Croatia, China, Korea, India, Thailand, and Argentine.
