Tomaž Štupnik, M.D, PhD

Dr. Tomaž Štupnik is a graduate of University of Ljubljana. He received training in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery in the University Medical Centre Ljubljana where he completed his residency in 2008. He was also trained in the Texas Heart Institute under Igor Gregoric, in the MD Anderson Cancer Center under Ara Vaporciyan and Reza Mehran and in the Methodist Hospital in Houston under Harish Seethamraju.

He was the first thoracic surgeon in South-East Europe to perform a VATS lobectomy in 2008 and also the first to perform a Uniportal VATS lobectomy in 2015. From 2012 to 2014 he organized 12 International courses of VATS Lobectomies with WetLabs and Live Surgery, hosted many thoracic surgeons from neighboring countries and performed a Live VATS Lobectomy Video Transmission in 2015. He has played a major role in spreading the VATS technique to the South-East Europe.

He was an invited speaker and member of the faculty at many international meetings such as 3rd International Uniportal VATS Course in Berlin, CEE Thoracic Symposium, 1st CEE Uniportal VATS WetLab in Istanbul, and 1st International Course on non-intubated and advanced VATS Lobectomy technique in Guangzhou, China. He has also coauthored several papers with Diego Gonzalez-Rivas on advanced uniportal VATS techniques published in EJCTS and JTD.

In 2016 Dr. Tomaž Štupnik finished his PhD from in the field of statistics and is currently developing a VATS Simulator to simplify the training of basic VATS skills. He is also an experienced glider pilot and instructor, a former national vice champion and holder of several national gliding records.
