Dr. Akif Turna was graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical School.He was trained in thoracic surgery from Yedikule Teaching Hospital for Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery. He received PhD degree in Immunology from Istanbul University School of Health Sciences. During his residency, he conducted thoracic surgical as well as immunology and molecular biology studies. He started VATS lobectomy program in 2007. He received national and European Thoracic Surgery Board Certificates. He worked as ‘Deputy Chief’ at Thoracic Surgery Department at Sureyyapasa Teaching Hospital for Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery. He became associate professor in 2005. He joined the faculty at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty in 2010. He is an active teacher on the national level and has trained medical students, thoracic surgery residents. He has been professor in Istanbul University since 2013 and he is the chief of Thoracic Surgery at Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty.

Dr. Turna is one of the associate editors of Turkish Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery and he is the managing editor of Turkish Journal Immunology.

Dr. Turna has a strong interest in minimally invasive thoracic surgery particularly uniportal VATS resections, surgery for emphysema, tumor immunology and molecular biology of cancer.
