Venue: The Westin Copley Place, 10 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA, 02116, USA
Date: October 29-30, 2016

The Asian Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ASTS) announces that it will host The First International Summit Meeting In General Thoracic Surgery in Boston, MA on October 29-30, 2016.

About the Asian Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ASTS)

General Thoracic Surgery is one of the most dynamically developing specialties in clinical medicine today. In dealing with prevalent and deadly chest diseases – ranging from lung cancer to pneumothorax to esophageal tumors – thoracic surgeons have utilized both advanced technology and sophisticated operative techniques to provide previously unimaginable levels of patient care. The dissemination of these latest practices of surgery, the training of young surgeons to the highest standards, and the education and interaction with the general public are vital roles in ensuring that patients receive the safest and most effective treatment. These roles are the responsibility of professional societies in General Thoracic Surgery.

The Asian Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ASTS) was formed in 2016 by a group of the leading general thoracic surgeons in Asia to fill a pressing need. The ASTS is the first professional society catering purely to the needs of patients and healthcare workers in General Thoracic Surgery in the largest continent in the world. It aims to provide a unique platform for exchange of clinical and academic knowledge from the Pacific to the Near East. It further aims to be the bridge for sharing of thoracic surgical expertise between Asia and the rest of the world so that patients globally may benefit.

About the Summit Meeting

As a fledgling society, the ASTS seeks to learn from the experiences of the established societies in Cardiothoracic Surgery from around the world to see how to best serve its members and their patients. The First International Summit Meeting In General Thoracic Surgery has therefore been convened to bring together the most prominent thoracic surgeons from all continents. These include leaders and senior members of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, the Asia Thoracoscopic Surgery Education Program, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, and other major associations. Never before has such a gathering of senior figures from so many societies been held in one focused meeting to foster international collaborations in this flourishing specialty. The meeting is logistically and academically supported by AME Publishing Company.

Unlike conventional meetings in surgery, this Summit Meeting will not consist of one presentation after another. Instead, round-table discussions will be held between the top expert surgeons from the Americas, Europe, Asia and other regions of the world. This frank and open dialogue format is novel, and a landmark for such meetings. Despite the very high level of expertise present, the meeting is truly open to all. Doctors and persons with an interest in the future of General Thoracic Surgery, and who may wish to join the exchange, will be most welcome. The meeting faculties are included in the appendix 1 and meeting program in appendix 2 following this introduction.
